The base power of this move is selected at random, varying between 0.5x and 1.5x the user's level, with the result rounded down to a whole number. The base power is calculated using the formula:

X * (N + 50) / 100

where X is the user's level and N is a randomly-generated number between 0 and 100. (note that base power cannot be less than 1.)
If damage was successfully dealt to the target, they will become trapped for 4-5 turns (always 5 if user is holding a Grip Claw), preventing escape or switching, even if the target uses U-turn or Volt Switch (Pokémon with the Run Away Ability or holding a Smoke Ball can escape but not switch out, and those holding a Shed Shell can switch out but not escape). The target also loses 1/16th of their maximum HP at the end of each turn. If the target uses Rapid Spin, Hyper Spin or Charge Spin, they will be freed and prematurely end this effect.
In a triple battle, this move may target anyone facing or adjacent to the user.
